We take a break from the longer Sandman narratives in The Sandman Library volume 3: Dream Country, which compiles four standalone stories including the script for the first one in the batch, “Calliope”. The script gives us an interesting peek and insight into how comic books are actually written – at least, the ones by Neil Gaiman anyway. No doubt it is one of the many drafts in the process of creating a comic story, but I guess I never pictured it to be so technical. It makes sense though – scripts for the screen are also technical with lighting and sound detail and whatnot, why wouldn’t a comic script have the same treatment since it is a visual medium after all? It certainly makes you appreciate the whole comic creation even more, and realise that much thought goes into what gets drawn where.
