In the Heart of the Sea tells the story of a whaling expedition that inspired the great American novel Moby Dick.
Herman Melville is an author in search of a story. He visits an old man, the last survivor of the Essex, a whaling ship that met its fate out in the open sea – the ship and its mates, at the mercy of a large bull sperm whale.
This movie is no Life of Pi. The story told is harsh and difficult and the scenes of starvation uneasy at best. While it is also a story of survival, it is also one of great sacrifice with no uplifting or triumphant ending.
Still, it is a story well told, and one worth watching if you’re in the mood for something quite serious. And at the very least you’ll come to understand how Moby Dick came to be.
Don’t mess with nature.
