This is not the novel to read if you’re looking for a soft and fluffy read. This is not the novel to read if you want that perfectly penned outcome where everyone lives happily ever after. This is a novel to read if you’d like to experience a beautifully written story, one that portrays the true Paris instead of Hollywood’s romanticised version while it shares with you the loneliness and heartbreak of a 13 year old boy.
As a first novel, I Love You Too Much by Alicia Drake is highly impressive. At first it appears and flows like an almost typical young-teenager-from-a-broken-home story, one with perhaps a little more literary panache than the typical YA novel. But as the story develops and we experience what Paul experiences, we live and feel his anguish and pain and anger, and it is one that doesn’t let up even as you read the final words.
This is not a book that leaves you happy. But it is a book worth reading.
