500 Words You Should Know by Caroline Taggart

500 Words You Should Know sounds like a boring, dictionary-like read, but to be honest, it was actually quite entertaining. Caroline Taggart takes on these words with a little bit of sass and attitude, which, I hope, will make them stick in my mind better.

The 500 words, however, are not obscure words. Taggart wanted to focus on words you can slip into (most) conversations, and as such you may recognise a huge number of them. I personally recognized at least 70%, and am glad I use most of them correctly. Some entries were a sort of reminder, like, “Hey! I should use that word more often!” While some undoubtedly pointed out how I may have been using them wrong.

I’ll be honest, I don’t know if I will remember everything, but it’s a pretty decent reference book for as and when you need it – just as long as you remember the word or category it belongs to.
